I removed the front elements but cannot seem to focus on anything. Should I be able to focus using the 265mm? Am I doing something wrong?

yeah you should. remove the front cell, extend the front standard about 11" away from the ground glass and then start to play with the focus. This is a 10.5" lens but the rear nodal point (where you're supposed to measure from) is quite aways behind the front standard (I'm guessing an inch).
